A and An are the most commonly used words in the English language, and if you read an English book or newspaper, you will see their use again and again.

In such a way, the Hindi meaning of both A and An is the same, but all of us are always confused about when to put a in a sentence and when an. But after reading this post, all your confusion will go away and you will learn to use Article A and An correctly. So let’s start.

Use  OF A, An

First of all, what are these A and An? So friends, let me tell you that both A and An are articles. There are three articles in English Grammar A, An and The. In this article we are reading about Article A and An.

A, An = एक

The Hindi meaning of both A and An is “one”. Now you must be thinking that we have been taught in our childhood that the English meaning of one is “One”, then A, An also in Hindi meaning “One” and One also in Hindi meaning “One”. That is, how three English meanings of a Hindi word? And which is right and which is wrong?

So see, these three are absolutely right in their place, but in English sentence A or An is used for “one” with noun. Even if you use One, the sentence will be wrong.

Rule – A or An is used with Singular Countable Noun in English sentence. That is, if there is a Noun (noun) in the sentence which can be counted and it is singular i.e. singular or says that there is only one, then Article A or An is used with it.

One thing to note is that while making a translation from Hindi to English, it is not necessary that if the word “a” remains in the Hindi sentence, then A or An is used in the English sentence, rather we have to see that the sentence is singlular. countable noun or not. If it is then use of A or An is mandatory otherwise the sentence will be wrong.

Example,

  1. यह कलम है – This is pen = Wrong
  2. यह कलम है – This is a pen = Right
  3. यह एक कलम है – This is a pen = Right

Understand these sentences carefully, “This is a pen.” Even though the word “one” is not used in this sentence, we know that there is a singular countable noun pen in it, so make an English translation of this sentence. Time “a” will be used and if it is not used then the sentence will be erroneous.

Article A और An का Use

  1. In a sentence, A is used before a word whose pronunciation begins with a consonant sound. That is, for the word or noun for which we want to put a or an, we will first see the pronunciation of it. If the pronunciation begins with a consonant sound, A will be used. Like Pen , Book, Computer , Mango etc.

You can see the pronunciation of all these words that is starting with “P, B, K, M” and we know that all these are Consonant so Article A will be used with them.

  1. In the sentence An is used before a word whose pronunciation begins with Vowel sound. Such as- Umbrella (Umbrella), Honest (Honest), Egg (Egg), Elephant (Elephant), Intelligent (Intelligent).

Friends, in such sentences, A/An is used according to the sound of the word nearest to it and not according to the noun given later. That is, if there is only Noun in the sentence, then according to Noun, Adjective + Noun, then according to Adjective and Adverb + Adjective + Noun, then A/An is used according to the pronunciation sound of Adverb.

Read the examples of the sentences given below carefully-
